Theme: The Anointing

Topic: Application of Oil

Scripture Reading:
Mark 6:12-13; James 5:14-15

Main Text:
Jeremiah 8:22
“Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?”

The application of oil is another important way of contacting the anointing.  The “application” of the anointing oil can take various forms such as rubbing it upon people or pouring it on them. Jesus Christ’s disciples anointed the sick with oil to heal them and cast out devils (Mark 6:12-13). The anointing oil by itself does not heal the sick but its application generates faith in the power of the Holy Ghost because oil is a symbol of the Holy Ghost.

Note that the disciples “went out” before the anointing became operative (Mark 6:12-13). Many people want to simply bask in the comfort of the church room and still flow in the anointing. Preaching repentance provides the basis for the efficiency of the anointing oil. Any use of the anointing oil without the accompaniment of repentance from sin is exploitation of the grace of God.

James, the brother of Jesus taught that when people are anointed with oil, coupled with the laying on of hands and prayer the sick are healed (James 5:14-15). This is a strong suggestion that the early Church practised the application of oil.

Pray that as you lay your hands on the sick, they shall recover.
