Topic: HAVE YOU RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT?
Acts 8:14-16 (KJV)
Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
There are some in the Body of Christ who teach, that, since it is the Holy Spirit who converts the sinner at new birth, receiving Christ is the same as receiving the Holy Spirit; and therefore anyone who is born again has received the Holy Spirit.
Well, our theme Scripture debunks such philosophy, and rather shows that one might be born again and yet might not have received the Holy Spirit.
It is true that there’s an element of the Holy Spirit in the work of salvation, but that’s not the same as receiving the Person of the Holy Spirit into one’s spirit. At salvation, the Holy Spirit plants wells of salvation in the recreated spirit (Isaiah 12:3); but when the believer receives the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit flows from within the recreated spirit as rivers of living water (John 7:37-39). I hope you know there’s a difference between a well and a river.
Our theme Scripture narrates the story of some people in Samaria who had received the Word of God, which is the same as receiving Jesus, and had been baptized in water. We baptize in water only after one is born again; meaning, they were born again. Yet, we discover that, Apostles Peter and John had to travel to Samaria to go and lay hands on them so that they might receive the Holy Spirit. So, you can be born again and might not have received the Holy Spirit.
When Apostle Paul met about 12 disciples in Ephesus, he asked them an important question; and this question is still relevant to the 21st century believer: “...Have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed?” (Acts 19:1-2). What is your answer?
