Topic : The Ministry of the Priest - Forgiving Sins

Scripture Reading:
Luke 19:1-10

Main Text:
Luke 19:8
And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

Zacchaeus restored four times what he took from people. In the biblical significance of numbers, four represents God’s creative works especially those that are related to the earth. The number four speaks of the north, south, east and west. It represents the divisions of the day namely morning, afternoon, night and dawn. Finally, it stands for the seasons of the year – spring, summer, autumn and winter.

The chief tax collector virtually forgave the people their sins, thus acting like a priest. Zacchaeus released the people from guilt and restored their goods to them. He ceased to hold anything against anyone, after his encounter with Jesus Christ.

One of the signs of the priestly office in Zacchaeus is the forgiveness of sins. The priestly ministry restores all things to the earth as a whole. It does not influence only the church but the entire earth. It is dangerous to hold the sins of people against them, because it denies both you and them forgiveness (John 20:21-23; Matthew 6:14-15).

Pray that believers would have the grace to stand as priests before God.
